Pretty Bedrooms

Hi All!  I have been out of town for a bit!  My family and I headed over to the Eastern Caribbean to soak in some much needed sunshine!  Today I have a guest blogger, Joanna, who has some great information on creating a pretty bedroom!  Take a peek and enjoy~

Hi, I’m Joanna, a blogger for Arcadian Lighting, a terrific source for all things lighting. Luckily, I spend my time collecting images and decorating ideas for my guest posts for blogs such as Design by Kelli. Thanks for letting me share. Today I bring you some of the prettiest bedrooms on the web. They’re fresh and very chic. There are so many way to add a feminine touch to most any décor, but nothing says “girly” quiet as much as a few frilly accents. Be sure to keep an eye out for lovely lighting fixtures in some of these spaces.

A sunshine yellow and crisp white bedroom is a bit shabby chic and a bit vintage. A lacy throw and scalloped toss pillows highlight the feminine edge of the space.

The colors used in this room tend to be a bit on the masculine side, yet the pooled panels at the windows and the tightly gathered bed skirt soften the look.

White-on-white is so romantic and this bedroom doesn’t disappoint. The ornately carved French bed is left to show its beauty with just a tiny frilled ruffling at the bed's edge.

This white bedroom with gold accents is a delightful confection with its quirky hanging light fixture all askew. Looks as if a bride thought so as well.

A bronze frilled duvet adds color to this ethereal bedroom retreat. Panels of fabric are used to create a canopy. Fresh flowers are the ultimate feminine touch for any space.

Sprinkles of soft pastels accent this crisp white bedroom. It’s a bit modern with a vintage vibe. The drum pendant light is a unique choice yet it works here.

A tufted and skirted slipper chair sits at the ready beside a tufted navy bed.

Soft pink toile is lovely on the wall and crown canopy above a white iron bed in this decidedly feminine space. The custom made teddy bear says a young girl lives here or perhaps it's a keepsake from a happy childhood. How fun are these?!  Introducing the newest design!  These labels can be used just about anywhere and are so versatile.  Pick your favorite chalk color and go to town labeling!  Of course, you can get them in any color vinyl but don't you just love the chalk board vinyl?

 I have a design similar to this in my own home every spring!  TJ Maxx is a great place to find these rustic baskets.  They have several to choose from.  Of course the antique blue canning jars are a perfect addition!  If you don't have any, simply make your own!

LOVE THIS!  This is the same idea as the watering can.  Line the umbrella with plastic....(A heavy duty grocery bag will do.)  Fill it with soil and add your favorite spring flowers!

Repurpose your old doors!

Do you often see old antique doors for sale or even for free?  GRAB them if you do!  There are so many neat things you can do with them.  Re-porpose them in your dining room as a table top! How about a chalk board or room divider?  Take a peek at these wonderfully creative ways in which old doors were used to add a unique design element and create an instant focal point!

Small Laundry spaces!

Like many of you, my laundry area is in a wonderfully tiny hall closet!  I have the itch to do something with it.  Here are some wonderful design ideas where a small closet has been transformed into a beautiful inviting area.  I may even start enjoying doing my laundry!  (I will let you know when I actually put these ideas to work!)  I absolutely love the first one!  The doors in front of the washer and dryer are a perfect way to hide the appliances.

Unique Walls!

Do you want to make a dramatic difference in one of your rooms without redecorating the entire thing? Dress up your walls! Simple identify your focal wall and wallpaper it or paint it a fun or dramatic color! Yes, I said wallpaper. :) There are so many beautiful and unique wall coverings available now that you can't dismiss it as your grandmothers design idea anymore!

When deciding which wall is your focal wall, identify the area in which you want the eye to go to. If you have a fireplace, built-in bookcase or architectural element in the room, this is the most natural focal point. If your room has no distinguishing features, identify the largest furniture pieces.   In the bedroom, the wall behind your bed should be your focal wall, the kitchen may be the wall behind the eating nook etc.
Once you have identified your focal wall, its time to choose your wall covering or color!  Don't be afraid to go a bit beyond your comfort level.  Often times we do a project and don't quite go as bold as we would like and it just doesn't turn out as spectacular as we were hoping.  That is because we fail to push ourselves to go all the way with the design.  If you are using paint and don't like the color, simply paint over it!  Paint is easily changed and if you are doing a focal wall, it is typically a smaller area to change. 
When choosing your color, don't over saturate your room with one color.  If you have blonde wood in your bedroom, stay away from yellow.  The color on the wall should pop against the furniture or wood.  Of course there are exceptions to this rule.  If you are doing a monochromatic design, keep it subtle. If your bedding is Blue, don't do blue on the walls.  You may have a secondary accent color in your bedding or accessories that you can highlight by painting the wall a similar color. 

Take  your time.  Always test the color on your wall before buying an entire gallon. Lighting, current wall colors and number of coats will effect the overall outcome of the paint.  Look at your test area at different times of the day.  This will give you an idea of how the color will change due to lighting.  If you want to go nuetral, choose something a little more saturated than you may not typically go with.  A dark mocha, rich chocolate or silky cappuccino color rather than your everyday beige will be much more appealing!
